Youngsters from the Roma population will have additional support for education in three Montenegrin municipalities: Podgorica, Nikšić, and Berane, for this school year. The Roma Education Fund (REF), with financial support from the EU, is implementing specific support programs for Roma from preschool age to higher education through the Parents Association (Udruženje Roditelji) and Help.
The goal is to support all categories of young Roma, together with their parents, to integrate into the educational system at all levels as better as possible. This creates a foundation for their more effective inclusion in society and enables them to escape poverty, which is, among other things, related to low education levels and thus to the poorer socio-economic status of many Roma citizens.
Work with preschool and early school-aged children from the Roma community is focused on improving access to kindergartens, strengthening parental engagement in early learning processes, and enhancing enrollment, staying in school, and educational achievements of Roma children in primary schools.
Specific activities for high school students and college students include mentoring, additional classes, career counseling, guidance for enrollment in higher education, as well as IT and digital literacy classes, providing concrete support for skill development and overcoming numerous challenges.
Since Roma students in primary schools already have mediators who help them in classes, the REF projects, implemented by the Parents Association and Help, plan to provide teaching assistants and mentors for high school and college students from the Roma community to facilitate the acquisition of curriculum material and easier career orientation for the youth.
Until the end of the program, paid internships that lasting two months, as well as additional IT and digital literacy classes, are planned for high school and college students.
REF, Help, and the Parents Association, together with Roma mediators, expect support in the implementation of these projects and call on all relevant educational institutions in Podgorica, Berane, and Nikšić to work together to provide young Roma people with easier and more efficient access to all levels of education, ensuring meaningful, not just declarative, inclusion and equal opportunities for all.
The meeting yesterday between representatives of Help, the European Delegation in Montenegro, the Parents Association, and the Ministry of Education, Science, and Innovation (MPNI) marked the beginning of the implementation of the third year of projects, which will last until the end of August 2026.
